Meet the New Summer 2023 Interns

This summer, we have taken on two editorial interns. Look for their author byline in our upcoming Washington Gardener Magazine issues and on this blog (as well as on our podcasts and videos). As a first assignment, I asked them to write a short introduction to our readers so you can get to know them.

Hi! My name is Marissa Yelenik, I am a rising junior journalism and psychology major at the University of Maryland, College Park, and I’ll be interning at the Washington Gardener this summer. I’m also a staff writer for the student publication Stories Beneath the Shell.
As a Savage, Maryland, native and amateur gardener, I’m excited to join the team and write for a local gardening magazine. Over the past couple of years, I’ve increased my experience from simple houseplants to trying my hand at more involved projects, such as blueberry bushes, tomato plants. and strawberries. I’m excited to increase my involvement with the local gardening community and work to learn more about this incredible field.

Hi everyone! My name is Taylor Edwards and I’m a rising senior majoring in journalism with a minor in Black Women’s Studies at the University of Maryland. After writing for the Black Explosion, UMD’s only Black publication, I discovered that I have a love for digital journalism. Through my work, I like to talk about misrepresented communities and issues. I’m passionate about representation in entertainment, especially in movies and TV shows. I created a documentary about it during my study abroad this past winter term. On campus, I’m the vice president of communications for South Campus Commons RHA and secretary for the Maryland Association of Black Journalists. Outside of school, I like to spend my free time reading and watching TV shows. The most I know about gardening is when my grandmother used to have a big garden in her backyard. Now, all I do is collect cute, low-maintenance succulents. I haven’t been around gardens since so I’m excited to learn more about it and the different gardens in the area!
