Intern Intro: Khloe Quill

This winter/spring, I have taken on one editorial intern. Look for her author byline in our upcoming Washington Gardener Magazine issues and on this blog. As a first assignment, I asked her to write a short introduction to our readers...

Greetings, readers! I am Khloe Quill, amateur gardener and not-so amateur writer and I’ll be this Spring’s intern for the Washington Gardener. While this is my fourth year as a journalism major at the University of Maryland, I’ll be taking an extra semester just so I can tend to the garden of the house I’m renting in College Park through the summer. (Kidding. Sort of?) I grew up on a farm, so I’ve no shortage of love for the outdoors and working with the land. My work with the Washington Gardener will be one of a couple writing endeavors over the course of my college career—I’ve worked with the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce doing public relations work as well as Her Campus, an online lifestyle blog at the University of Maryland. In my free time, I write short stories, predominantly of the horror variety. I also try to keep my cat from chewing on my plethora of pothos, butterfly palms, and snake plants. This semester should be an interesting one, and I’m thrilled it will be spent working with a magazine whose interests align so closely with my own. However online gardening news, events, and planning look, I promise to make it happen and make it marvelous. ‘Til next time —KQ

2021 Seed Exchanges Announced

On National Seed Swap Day (seedswapday.com) this year -- January 30, 2021 -- we will host a free, LIVE chat from 2:00-4:00pm Eastern Time for seed swappers everywhere. We will explore ways to hold in-person seed swap events during the COVID-19 pandemic and other options for safely swapping seeds. This event will feature surprises and special guests talking about everything seed-related from seed collecting tips to easy propagating tricks.

We hope you can join us for the live session at Washington Gardener Magazine | Facebook and https://www.youtube.com/washingtongardenermagazine, but if you cannot, we will be recording the event and have it available on YouTube to view anytime.

Our in-person Washington Gardener Magazine Seed Exchanges will take place on Saturday, March, 27, at Green Spring Gardens in Fairfax County, VA, and on Saturday, April 3, at Brookside Gardens in Montgomery County, MD. The event registration links will be posted in early March.

We expect our in-person events to have several changes for safety during the pandemic. First, there will only be advance registrations and none at the doors. Next, we may change the format to eliminate the speaking sessions and instead schedule swapping groups in staggered shifts. Finally, as the events are later in the growing season, we will encourage swappers to bring not only seeds and plant cuttings, but also started seedlings as well. These details will evolve as local COVID-19 procedures and restrictions allow.
