Fenton Friday: National Strawberry Month

May is National Strawberry Month, so I ran out today to check on my berries and sure enough a handful were ripe! Of course, I ate some right then and there - but didn't bring in a few to have with my morning cereal tomorrow.

Elsewhere in the plot, the asparagus has ended and I am letting the remaining stalks grow up to renew itself for next year. The garlic looks really robust and the arugula has bolted and turned into a small shrub!

The chamomile and yarrow are blooming. The top growth of both the carrots and potatoes are progressing well. The blackberries are forming in good number. I may even have enough at once for a pie or crumble this year! Finally, the peas are setting flower and I hope to have at least a few purple pods to sample before the summer heat scorches the vines.

It is going to be a scorcher of a weekend here in the Mid-Atlantic and is already quite hot and humid today, so I am holding off planting anything new for a bit.

What are you growing and eating this week from your edible garden?

About Fenton Friday: Every Friday during the growing season, I'll be giving you an update on my community garden plot at the Fenton Street Community Garden just across the street from my house in zone 7 Mid-Atlantic MD/DC border. I'm plot #16. It is a 10 ft x 20 ft space and this is our 11th year in the garden. (It opened in May 2011.) See past posts about our edible garden by putting "Fenton" into the Search box above.
