Fenton Friday: Garlic Harvest

We got out the organic fish fertilizer for the Tomatoes, Peppers, and Eggplant we planted a couple weeks ago and put a cover cloth* over the Eggplant as there are already signs of stippling on the leaves (likely from flea beetles - but we saw no bugs or eggs on them at that time).

I continued to harvest a quart of Blackberries every other day. I think it is starting to slow down a bit and I may remove the protective mesh* and rubber snake* from it in a week or so.

We pulled the last of the Lettuces and planted a sprouted Sweet Potato in their spot, which is inside the rabbit-proof box (see how-to instructions to make your own rabbit-proof box at https://washingtongardener.blogspot.com/2020/08/august-2020-issue-of-washington.html). I plan to add a row of Beans in there with it soon.

We harvested the Garlic (photo at top) and planted several Genovese and Lemon Basil seedlings in its spot -- along with a trio of new Basil seedlings that I'm trialing  that went into the pot where the Cilantro was pulled from last week. The Garlic harvest was not as robust as previous years as I planted less and I think the cool spring and recent drought made for small bulbs.

What are you growing in your edible garden this week?

About Fenton Friday: Every Friday during the growing season, I'll be giving you an update on my community garden plot at the Fenton Street Community Garden just across the street from my house in zone 7 Mid-Atlantic MD/DC border. I'm plot #16. It is a 10 ft x 20 ft space and this is our 13th year in the garden. (It opened in May 2011.) See past posts about our edible garden by putting "Fenton" into the Search box above (at the top, left on this blog).
