Plant Profile: Joe Pye Weed

Joe Pye Weed (Eupatorium purpureum) is a perennial plant that blooms in mid-summer through autumn. It is native to the Eastern United States and is hardy to zones 4-8. Spotted Joe Pye Weed (Eupatorium maculatum) and Hollow Joe Pye Weed (Eupatorium fistulosum) are very similar in looks and growth habits.

Joe Pye Weed prefers full to part-sun light conditions and evenly moist soils. It is both deer- and rabbit-resistant. It also tolerates clay soil and road salt spray well. The only maintenance it needs is to cut it back to the ground in early spring.

It is a great addition to any pollinator garden as it is a real magnet for attracting both bees and butterflies.

Joe Pye Weed grows to 6 feet tall and can lean over. It is best situate it at the back of the border where other plants  can support it. You can also pinch back the plant in late spring, so that it stays shorter and creates more flowering branches.

‘Gateway’ is a popular cultivar that is widely available for home gardeners. There are also shorter varieties for sale that do not grow as tall as the straight species. These include ‘Little Joe’, ‘Red Dwarf’, and ‘Baby Joe’.
